Benjamin Griffin, Alpine Ski Racer Tarakani
To be New Zealand’s most successful Alpine Ski Racer.
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones”. Confucius
The next ten years will be the most important in Ben’s Alpine Ski Racing career. With goals that include the World Cup, World Championship and Olympic titles, Ben is driven to ultimately become New Zealand’s most successful Alpine Ski Racer ever.
Named Alpine Skier of the Year in 2008, ranked first in the country for three out of five disciplines and subsequently qualifying for the 2009 World Championship and meeting the criteria for the 2010 Olympic Games, Ben seemed unstoppable. Then disaster struck during a dry-land training exercise when Ben fractured his neck and was almost paralyzed. Undergoing complex surgery that took him off the snow for eleven months, Ben continued to remain passionate about his sport. Returning to the snow in February 2009 and after just one month of intense training, Ben competed in France and Austria, returning to New Zealand with a silver and bronze medal.
Ben says all his life he has been knocking on the door of representative level sports, but nothing has ever been able to separate him from his true passion in the mountains. Alpine ski racing is his life and although it has given him much already, he believes it will take him further still.
