Shares bouncing back in May

Performance update, May 2020

In May, global investment markets have recovered strongly from their March lows due to Covid-19. The NZ share market has also rebounded and is now less than 8% below its February record highs. This is good news for most KiwiSaver members.

As market sentiment improved, global share returns gained 16% in total over the months of April and May. Australian shares and Global infrastructure have recovered, with returns of 13% in May, while NZ shares climbed 11% over the month. Most of the bounce back took place in April, with moderate additional gains posted in May and the beginning of June also seeing returning market strength. This indicates investors are looking past the impact of Covid-19 and focusing on post-lockdown activity in relation to growth, unemployment, spending and profits.

Central banks are keeping interest policy rates low with the view that concerns among investors are being reduced. Government bonds, both in NZ and internationally, have continued to benefit from the Central Banks buying to support economic stimulus, and yields have moved broadly sideways in the US and NZ despite the improving market mood.

While the markets are recovering, we can expect the market ups and downs to continue for some time. It’s helpful to remember that KiwiSaver is an investment, and market movements are a normal part of investing.

It’s important to keep your financial goals in mind when you’re thinking about investments and your KiwiSaver. That’s why making sure you’re in a suitable fund is important, and if you are, hang in there, as for most customers KiwiSaver is a long-term investment and unless your individual circumstances have changed it’s generally not the best time to make hasty decisions.

If you can continue to make regular contributions to your KiwiSaver account, you’re now buying investments at a cheaper price than they were at the start of the year. So when the  markets start to go up, your balance will recover as well.

If you’re not contributing right now, that’s ok too. One of the benefits of being with a full-service provider like AMP is that we have a team of experienced advisers who can help you make sense of what’s going on. We can also talk to you about getting a plan in place to help you get on track with your KiwiSaver – we’re here to help.
