NZRT and My Super

A retirement savings option from your employer

The New Zealand Retirement Trust (NZRT) is an employer-sponsored workplace savings scheme designed to help you save for a more comfortable retirement. If your employer offers a NZRT employer plan, you may be eligible to join.

With the NZRT, a team of experienced investment professionals will manage your savings to help you maximise your retirement nest egg.

If you decide to leave your employer you’ll also have the option to transfer to the My Super section of the NZRT, your own personal plan within NZRT, so you can continue to save for your retirement.

NZRT might suit you if you’re...

  • looking for a retirement savings scheme operated by an experienced investment team
  • wanting a flexible employer-sponsored option that you can still use if you leave your employer.

Here’s what you get:

  • A scheme with investment options that can be tailored to suit your personal savings goals.
  • Dedicated support from a team of professional advisers to keep you up-to-date on your savings and options.
  • 24/7 access via our online, easy-to-use portal, My AMP and My AMP app for iPhone and Android.

Your Member Booklet (available from your employer) will tell you if any discounts apply to your employer plan.

How it works

The NZRT has a range of funds available, each invested in a variety of assets. Ask your employer for a copy of your ‘member booklet’ to see which funds are available to you through your employer’s NZRT plan.

When it comes to your investment strategy you generally have three options (if your employer plan allows):

  1. AMP Lifesteps Investment Programme (Lifesteps).
  2. You may be able to choose your own fund, or even split your investment between funds. Use our tool to help you decide which fund or funds are right for you.
  3. A mix of Lifesteps and a choice of your own fund.

Ways to manage your NZRT account

You have two options for managing your NZRT account:

1. You can use My AMP, where you can:

  • update your personal contact details
  • keep track of your savings
  • change your investment options
  • access the latest investment information
  • view your account summary
  • check and update your Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR)
  • view past NZRT correspondence.

2. You can contact us to:

  • update your personal contact or bank account details
  • withdraw your membership if you leave your employer
  • transfer to My Super when leaving your employer (in most cases).

Before you make decisions about changing investments talk to an adviser, who can help to maximise your savings in the long term.

You can also keep track of your balance while you’re on the move by using the My AMP app where you can, view your account balance, access your transaction history, view the funds you are invested in and keep up to date with news and insights.

You will need to ensure you are already registered to manage your accounts online with our online portal, My AMP before using the app.

The Lifesteps Investment Programme (Lifesteps) automatically allocates savings to the fund that matches your age over time. This means your savings are invested in the most appropriate fund for a typical investor your age.

When you’re younger, you can generally accept more unpredictable investment returns, in exchange for the potential to earn greater returns over the long term.

However, as you get older you have less time to recover any losses before needing your retirement savings. Lifesteps aims to reduce the potential for investment risk as you age.

If you’re saving with the NZRT through your employer's plan, check your ‘member booklet’ (ask your employer for a copy) to see what contributions you’re required to make.

If your plan allows you to increase your contributions, contact your employer payroll office to change contributions from your salary.

If you’re a My Super member, and are not saving through your employer simply contact us to set up a direct debit to make regular contributions directly.

When you leave your employer, you don’t need to withdraw from NZRT; we'll normally transfer your membership to My Super. My Super is your own personal plan within NZRT that allows you to continue to save for your retirement.

My Super is flexible and convenient with benefits including:

  • a wide range of investment options, including both diversified and single sector funds allowing your retirement savings plan to change as you do
  • ability to make regular or one off lump sum contributions (minimum amount of $50.00 per contribution)
  • online access with My AMP, allowing you to check your savings, update your details, or make an investment switch, anytime, seven days a week
  • access to your savings whenever you like (minimums apply).

To find out more about My Super, download the latest NZRT Product Disclosure Statement.

NZRT offers a range of different funds to meet the needs of our members. They can be found in the NZRT Product Disclosure Statement and NZRT Fund Update Booklet. There will be a default fund for your employer plan and there may be limitations on your fund choice. This is outlined in your ‘member booklet’ which your employer will provide.

You can choose your own fund, or even split your investment between funds. Use the AMP Risk Profiler Tool to help you decide which fund or funds are right for you.
