Frequently asked questions

When should I book my travel insurance?

It’s a good idea to consider travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. Once your cover is confirmed, it can help protect you from unexpected cancellation costs and loss of deposits before you even leave home.

Are my dependent children covered under my policy?

Yes, dependent children travelling with someone covered under the policy can be included at no additional cost. For International Cover, this applies to dependent children up to 21 years old. Please note the policy benefits are shared across the insured travelers within the policy limits. Please check the definition of “Dependent Children” in the Policy Wording.

What does travel insurance not cover?

Before choosing a travel insurance policy, please read the General Exclusions and the relevant section exclusions in the Policy Wording so you understand what is and isn’t covered. Terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply.

Travel against government advice, such as a New Zealand Government “do not travel” warning issued before you purchased your policy, will void cover for related claims.

What about pre-existing medical conditions? Am I covered if I travel with an existing illness?

It is important to understand that Pre-existing Medical Conditions may not be covered under your plan. Some pre-existing medical conditions may be automatically covered under the Comprehensive plan if they meet certain criteria. For conditions outside those listed in the Pre-existing Medical Conditions section, cover may be available after a medical assessment.

A Pre-existing Medical Condition means:
1. Any physical defect, infirmity, existing or recurring illness, Injury, disability or Mental Illness of which You, or the person due to whom You are claiming, are aware of.
2. Any medical condition for which You, or the person due to whom you are claiming have had or received a medical examination, consultation, treatment, investigation and/or medication in the 12 months prior to the date Your policy was issued.

What if I injure myself or become sick under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Does that change my cover?

Yes, drinking alcohol or taking recreational drug use can affect your cover. The Policy Wording has a General Exclusion for being under the influence of any intoxicating liquor, drugs or substances, except for a drug prescribed by a Registered Medical Practitioner and taken as directed.

This exclusion would be applied if there was evidence that alcohol, drugs or other substances contributed to the event you are claiming for. If you choose to drink alcohol while travelling, please do so responsibly to help reduce the risk of something going wrong.

If I hire a car and have an accident, is the rental vehicle excess covered?

Yes, you are covered for the insurance excess you are required to pay, as a result of loss or damage to a rental vehicle you have hired, up to the policy’s maximum benefit.

The Comprehensive plan has a maximum benefit limit of $6000.

The Essentials plan has a maximum benefit limit of $1000.

Terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusion apply.

If something happens while I’m overseas, how do I make a claim?

Please let us know about your claim as soon as possible, and no later than 30 days after your trip ends.

Our Claims Document Checklist can help guide you on the types of information that may support your claim. Please include any documents you think are relevant for your claim.

When you’re ready, the easiest way to lodge your claim is through our online claim portal.
