Types of car insurance


There are three main types of car insurance cover options that offer different levels of protection: Comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft, and Third Party Property Damage.



Comprehensive Car Insurance


Motor insurance can cover you for a wide variety of incidents and accidents. Key benefits of AMP’s comprehensive policy include a lifetime guarantee on approved repairs, cover for emergency travel, accommodation and repairs associated with an insured event, and car lock and key replacement.


Third Party Fire and Theft


AMP's Third Party Fire and Theft policy provides cover against fire and theft, plus cover for damage caused to someone else's property by your vehicle. Other benefits include coverage for towing and storage costs, and up to 14 days of car hire after theft.


Third Party Property Damage


The most basic car cover we offer at AMP, Third Party Property Damage covers you for damage your motor vehicle causes to other people’s property. It does not protect the vehicle itself, although you can add optional extras, such as excess-free windscreen and glass repair/replacement.

How to file a car insurance claim after an accident or theft

At AMP we know that car accidents and thefts are distressing events, so we aim to make the process of making a claim as simple as possible. The basic steps of an insurance claim are:

1. Call and tell us about your claim or fill in our online claim form.
2. We’ll assess your claim, either approving it on the spot or asking for more info.
3. Claim approved, we’ll help you get everything sorted.

Does my car insurance cover windscreen replacement?

Excess-free windscreen/windshield and window glass chip repair are automatically included in our comprehensive car policy. If your windscreen needs to be replaced, normal policy excesses will apply, unless you choose to add the optional excess-free windscreen and window glass replacement benefit to your policy (which can also be added to AMP Third Party products.

Note: the excess-free benefit only applies if you don’t claim for other car damage.

Are my car modifications covered under my insurance policy?

Our vehicle insurance includes cover for modifications (performance-enhancing additions) and accessories (non-performance-enhancing additions) that we have agreed to cover. We won’t offer cover for the following:

• Boost controller or External wastegate
• Custom/Specialised paint or Vinyl wrap (aftermarket)
• Door mods (Scissor/Gull wing or Shaved handles)
• Internal engine modifications
• Nitro/Hydrogen fuel
• Petrol turbo or Supercharger (fitted aftermarket)
• Roll bar or Roll cage or Racing harness
• Suspension replaced with airbags or hydraulics or pneumatics
• Wheelchair access
• 2WD/4WD conversions or Gearbox upgrade

Am I covered if my car breaks down?

Roadside Assistance is available as an optional benefit with comprehensive car insurance. Should your car break down, roadside assistance provides help with flat tyres, batteries, emergency fuel and towing. Find out more about this optional benefit here.

Does my car insurance cover other drivers?

When you purchase vehicle insurance it’s wise to list all drivers who use the car on a regular basis, as this ensures you are covered if an incident occurs when any of the listed individuals are driving. Your premium will be based on the drivers you provide, calculated using factors such as age and driving history. Adding certain drivers may even see you enjoy a discount on your insurance premium.

What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you must pay to make a claim. Depending on the circumstances, you may not have to pay an excess if it is agreed that the driver of your car was not at fault. On the flip side, you may have to pay more than one type of excess when you claim. Types of additional excess can include:

• Age excess which applies if a driver under 25 years of age was driving, using or in charge of your car at the time of the incident.
• Inexperienced driver excess which applies if a driver 25 years of age or over and licensed for the car type for less than 2 years, was driving, using or in charge of your car at the time of the event.
• Driver history excess which applies if a driver who has had their license cancelled, suspended, or disqualified in the last 3 years was driving, using or in charge of your car at the time of the incident.
